Article: Getting back in: returning to libraries after a career break

Crawford, Alice, “Getting Back In: Returning to Libraries after a Career Break”, Impact (Journal of the CILIP Career Development Group), December (2007), pp. 73-75.

I discovered this article by Alice Crawford relatively early in my career break and I’ve found it so useful that I’ve returned to it at various points. It describes Alice’s return to professional work after taking time out and it maps the particular way she found to get back in (taking part-time para-professional library and other-related academic work rather than applying only for the type of professional role she had before she took time out).

While it details a very personal journey, is possibly sector and geographically specific and while the opportunities presented to Alice may not present themselves to me in the same way, I’ve taken great heart over the years just knowing that somebody else in the library sector has been through a similar experience to the one I’m still going through and has come through it successfully.
